Barren River Litters and Puppies Getting a puppy from the best possible breeding for competition (Field Trial or Hunt Test), hunting or an intelligent companion is essential. We are serious about our "Super Duck Pups" and work very hard to ensure your pup is free of any hereditary defects. All of our sires and dams are OFA'd and are certified as Excellent or Good hips, normal elbows and good eyes. Our dams are bred only to carefully selected proven labs from NFC, NAFC, AFC, FC, AFC, CNFC and CNAFC titled sires that have proven themselves. It is also essential for our pups to have the best start possible. Their dewclaws are removed, socialized and have their first set of shots. A 27 month guarantee is given on hips, elbows and eyes. (The puppy buyer must sign the guarantee that they will faithfully feed (glucosamine and chondroitin supplements) in their food daily or the guarantee is invalid. We recommend feeding Purina Large Breed Puppy chow to the pup as it also has glucosamine in it's ingredients). Your pup will really grow fast and needs these supplements for their hips and elbows growth so dysplasia does not develop. We also supply lots of support and training tips for our new Barren River Kennel puppy owners!!! At 8 weeks, weather permitting, we introduce the pups to the water in the creek for them to splash or swim in if they want. We throw little squeaky toys and bumpers in the creek for them to retrieve back to us. Barren River Kennels "Super Duck Pups" have proven to be excellent field trial, hunt test and gun dog retrievers. They have also made many a home happy to have a companion to love and have as a dear friend. Teaching your pup to sit, stay and walk by your side on leash and come here is your very basic assignment when they come home with you. Play with them in a hallway where they can only come back to you. Make them sit, hold their collar, squeak the toy, throw it and make them hold it and sit by your side when they return. You will become their "mama" from 8-12 weeks. Play with them ten minutes a day, always ending on a positive note. When they have done a retriever well, put them up wanting more.
